While rarely used in formal writing, underscores are used in typography (and informally) to imply italics in situations where italics (and thus, emphasis) cannot actually be printed. They can also be used to write blanks on paper forms, and in computer code, they are often used to represent spaces when writing names that must be exactly one word.
